Making peace with strategy games on a touchscreen

March 13, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

I used to think strategy games just did not belong on phones. Too much information, too little screen, and fingers that block the very thing you need to see. Ironline Command proved me wrong, mostly.

The breakthrough for me was learning the game's gesture shortcuts. Once I stopped fighting the interface and let muscle memory take over, issuing orders became fast and even satisfying. Good touch strategy is all about smart shortcuts.

It still is not perfect. There are moments in a chaotic battle where I wished for a mouse. But the trade-off of playing a real strategy game anywhere, on the couch or on a train, turned out to be worth it.

My tip for anyone trying the genre on mobile: spend your first hour just learning the controls in easy missions. The difficulty is often just unfamiliarity, and it fades fast.
